Yueyang, also known as Baling and Yuezhou in ancient times, is a renowned cultural city with a history of more than 2,500 years. Adjacent to Hubei Province and Jiangxi Province, Yueyang enjoys rich resources, superior location and beautiful scenery. Now it has jurisdiction over four counties, two cities and four districts with a total area of 15,000 square kilometers and a total population of 5,245,400, including an urban area of 824 square kilometers and urban population of 780,000. Its comprehensive economic strength ranks second in Hunan Province, only behind Changsha, the provincial capital.
Yueyang, lies on the intersections of one lake (Dongting Lake), two plains (Jianghan Plain and Dongting Lake Plain), three provinces (Hunan Province, Hubei Province and Jiangxi Province), four traffic arteries (Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Zhuhai expressway, 107 national highway and the Yangtze River). It is a “golden crossroad” at the middle reach of Yangtze River, second to Wuhan City. Since the operation of Dongting Lake Bridge, the city has played an increasing important part in facilitating an efficient transportation system.
As an emerging industrial city, Yueyang City has more than 2,000 industrial enterprises, including over 90 large and medium-sized enterprises. The total industrial output value reaches 52.4 billion yuan. Six pillar industries of chemical engineering, building materials, refrigeration, paper, feed and medicine have been initially formed. There are the largest petrochemical enterprise in central and southern China, the largest ramie textile enterprise in Asia, the largest air conditioner manufacturer for passenger car in China, one of the top ten paper factories in China, and the largest thermal power plant in Hunan. In recent years, five companies have been listed successfully, becoming a new force in the development of Yueyang’s economy.
Yueyang City, a famous production base with abundant resources, covers an water area of 5.42 million mu (about 361,333 hectares), ranking first in the total amount of water resources of the province. The city has more than 60 kinds of minerals, especially rare metal minerals and non-metal minerals, among which monazite reserves tops the list in China and high-quality kaolin reserves exceed 100 million tons.
Yueyang City is not only one of the three “hometowns of rare metals” in China, but also the national production base of grain, cotton, oilseed and pigs. Four counties and cities of Yueyang City are among the top 100 counties in China in the production of grain, cotton and pig. The city’s total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery amounts to 13.9 billion yuan. The output of grain, cotton, oil, pig and other major agricultural products ranks forefront in the province. And the output of aquatic products has ranked first in the province for 11 consecutive years. The crabs of Yangtze River, the shrimps of Dongting Lake and Xiangyun crucian have become three signature products of the city’s aquaculture industry. Yueyang City is also known for its tourism and culture. It boasts picturesque Dongting Lake, widely-known Yueyang Tower, fairy-tale like Junshan Island and revolutionary monuments like the Former Site of Pingjiang Uprising and Former Residence of Ren Bishi. It is a home to beautiful mountains and water, famous heritages and articles and distinguished talents. Yueyang City was listed as a national historical and cultural city in 1994, and it became one of the outstanding tourist cities in China in 1998. It attracts more than 4.5 million tourists from home and abroad a year, and earns 1.02 billion yuan annually.
Since the reform and opening up, Yueyang City has moved to the fast lane of economic and social development.
