The Memorial Hall of Comrade Liu Shaoqi

It covers an area of 34,000 square meters and the floorage of 7,000 square meters, including the Former Residence of Comrade Liu Shaoqi, the Memorial Museum of Liu Shaoqi and the Liu Shaoqi’s Bronze Statue and other buildings. The museum was built in 1984 and opened in 1988. It houses eight exhibition rooms, one audio and video hall, and two memorial pavilions with a 7.1-meter-high bronze statue of Liu Shaoqi on the hill to its southwest and the Former Residence of Comrade Liu Shaoqi about 250 meters north of the hall.
Gatehouse of Liu Shaoqi’s Birthplace
The Gatehouse of Liu Shaoqi’s Birthplace was built in 1998 in commemoration of Liu Shaoqi’s 100th birthday. The Gatehouse is 12.4 meters high and 15 meters wide, with an ancient style typical in the south of the Yangtze River.
Square of Comrade Liu Shaoqi’s Bronze Statue
The Comrade Liu Shaoqi’s Bronze Statue was built in 1988 in commemoration of Liu Shaoqi’s 90th birthday with an area of more than 8,000 square meters. The number “7.1” indicates two meanings. July 1 is our Party’s birthday, so “7.1” means that Liu Shaoqi committed himself to the Party’s construction and gave all his life to the cause of the Party and the people. He is an outstanding leader of the Party. The number also refers to his age, for he died at the age of 71.
Memorial Museum of Comrade Liu Shaoqi
The Memorial Museum of Comrade Liu Shaoqi is the only biographical museum which completely and systematically displays Liu Shaoqi’s life and achievements. It was opened on November 24, 1988 with an area of over 2,700 square meters, featuring the classical style in the south of the Yangtze River.
The exhibition takes lifetime as the main line and combines with different themes to reflect Liu Shaoqi’s glorious and great life and to show his brilliant thoughts and remarkable achievements.
Museum of Liu Shaoqi and workers’ movement
The exhibition in the museum is divided into six parts, on the basis of the course of Chinese workers’ movement and trade union work under Liu’s leadership. It shows the outstanding exploits and heroic spirit of comrade Liu Shaoqi as a pioneer, founder, innovator and theorist of Chinese workers’ movement and labor unions, through nearly 200 precious historical pictures, more than 100 pieces (sets) of cultural relics, data, in the forms of sculpture, graphics, art installation and so on.
Former Residence of Comrade Liu Shaoqi
The Former Residence of Comrade Liu Shaoqi, featuring a style of civil-structure quadrangles in the south of Yangzte River, covers an area of more than 1,300 square meters and a floorage of 1,074 square meters. There are about 21 houses, of which 16 are tile-roofed and 5 thatched. More than 200 exhibits are displayed here to reproduce the lives of Hunan farmers and the daily scenes of Liu Shaoqi vividly.
Cultural Relics Hall of Liu Shaoqi
The Cultural Relics Hall of Liu Shaoqi was built according to the structure of Fuluju in Zhongnanhai, Beijing. Liu Shaoqi, then chairman of People’s Republic of China, worked here from 1963 to 1967, during which, the hall was old and even in disrepair, with minimal decoration.
The Cultural Relics Hall of Liu Shaoqi has added a number of functional areas with a total floorage of 4,216 square meters, integrating exhibition, cultural relics protection, research and publicity.
Airplane Used by Liu Shaoqi
Model IL 18-240 is the only existing one among the five of such a model which China bought from the Soviet Union in 1959. It is basically well preserved, with the original seats and the camp bed in the cabin. As a special airplane for the major leaders of the Party and the country at that time, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Peng Zhen and Chen Yi all had been on this plane for their visits. Liu Shaoqi had taken this airplane to many diplomatic occasions.
Self-Cultivation Pavilion
The Self-Cultivation Pavilion is set up in commemoration of Liu Shaoqi’s famous writing “How to Be a Good Communist”. With an area of 6,000 square meters and a floorage of over 1,200 square meters, the pavilion is composed of two courtyards and a small gathering square. It is an archaized garden complex based on the local folk houses and built by Chinese traditional gardening techniques with a style of simplicity and elegance.
Willow-Leaf Lake
The Willow-Leaf Lake, an artificial lake with an area of more than 6,000 square meters, reflects the noble character of Liu Shaoqi who cared about the people all the time. Surrounded by stone arch bridge, rockery, pavilion, willow and crape myrtle, the whole park overflows with vigour.
Huaminglou Tower
The Huaminglou Tower, a 33.02-meter-high and five-story building, covers an area of nearly 5,000 square meters and a floorage of more than 2,000 square meters. In the tower are displayed the mural paintings of “the 8 beautiful scenes of Ningxiang County”, some bronze ware unearthed in Ningxiang, the etched plate paintings of some famous cultural figures in Hunan Province and the bronze statue of Liu Shaoqi when he was young, by which visitors can appreciate the beautiful scenery and learn from a galaxy of talents in Hunan Province.
Tanzichong School
The Tanzichong School was set up in 1888 as the ancestral hall for a clan surnamed Zhu originally. During the reign of Guangxu of Qing Dynasty, some clansmen of Zhu studied here and Liu Shaoqi also started his study in 1906 here. The hall occupies an area of 1,200 square meters and has 17 houses, with an architectural style of quadrangle. It was built with blue bricks, tiles and fir wood.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the hall was renamed Tanzichong School and used as a teaching place. In 2011, the People’s Government of Hunan Province announced it as a cultural site under the provincial-level protection.
