Huaihua covers a total area of 27,600 square kilometers and is dotted with 187 traditional Chinese villages housing ten thousands of villagers.
“These well-preserved ancient villages in Huaihua which reflect the different cultures of different ethnic groups, are rare in China in terms of the number, characteristics and diversity,” wrote Luo Zhewen, a famous Chinese expert on ancient architecture.
Huaihua has made great efforts to protect, inherit and develop its traditional villages.
“Gaoyi Village is the home of more than 2,300 people in over 630 households. Currently, 104 ancient buildings of more than 600 years have been preserved here, which are praised as “the living fossils of ancient residential buildings” by experts.
Yang Wuqiang, director of the Scenic Area Management Institute of Gaoyi Village, introduced that the high population density of the village has brought great difficulties to the protection and development of the ancient village. It is a difficult problem on how to retain the original style of the village and meet the needs of the local villagers for a better living environment.
Taking the villagers’ opinions into consideration, Huitong County divided Gaoyi Village into four parts, namely the comprehensive tourism service area, the ancient residential buildings sightseeing area, the Wushui River leisure tourism area and the farming culture tourism area.
Efforts were made to renovate the residential buildings in the scenic areas and build a new village outside the ancient village for some local villagers to retain the original architectural style of the ancient village to the greatest extent.
The local government, involved in the work like lands replacement and property rights transferring, released and collected funds to repair and protect the ancient villages and organized villagers to participate in the construction of the ancient villages.
The county makes great efforts not only to repair the traditional buildings, but also to improve the rural environments.
